At the end of 2015 there was alarming news that didn’t quite cause the global concern I expected.

There’s no doubt scientists are VERY worried.

But the general population – and many GPs – seem happy to remain unaware, or simply don’t want to face up to the scale of the problem.

It all began with a pig in China…

It was an ordinary pig from a farm, just like you find all over the world.

Except this pig had caught a disease.

And there was absolutely NO anti-biotic that could cure it.

The very last of the all-resistant antibiotics, known as colistin, had failed.

It means there are no fail-safe options left to stop a colistin-resistant bug that is present in both animals and people… and which is now spreading across borders.

The reason this is happening is that farmers across the world like to pump animals full of antibiotics. It prevents disease and helps them get nice and fat.

This is why the world goes through 11,942 tonnes of agricultural colistin every year, with China one of the biggest users.

So now that there’s a mutation that cannot be stopped, what next?

Well, before you panic, I’m not saying that this is the next global plague. You don’t need to stock up on tins of beans and head for the Scottish Highlands.

Not yet anyway…

But this is part of one of the most serious health stories of our times. One that really cannot be overstated.

What happens when the drugs don’t work…

After decades of over-use and abuse of anti-biotics, the drugs aren’t working like they used to.

Which means that in the future everything from cuts to routine operations like hip replacements and C-sections might become deadly.

And yet GPs continue to over-prescribe them, even when the illness is a virus, not bacteria, usually citing “patient pressure”.

Others are so pushed for time they give out antibiotics without bothering to confirm the diagnosis.

Far too often, antibiotics are given to people who could solve or prevent the problem with natural remedies, bed rest and a bit of patience to let the body fight the infection.

Worst of all is an agricultural industry that only cares about profits. The antibiotics pumped into animals account for 80% of all the antibiotics used in the world.

To get fatter cows and pigs for our steaks and pies, we’re putting the future of humanity at stake.

In the United States 2 million people are infected every year with bacteria that can’t be treated withstandard antibiotics. Of those, 23,000 will die.

And this is only going to get worse….

A recent study by the World Health Organisation (WHO)says that this threat is happening right now, and couldaffect anyone, young or old, in any country. Dr Keiji Fukuda, the Assistant Director-General for Health Security says:

“The world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill.”

It’s a horrible thought isn’t it? That after all our progress beating diseases we could be flung back to medieval times!

But there is a solution…

Well there are at least two….

The first is something you can do nothing about (unless you happen to be a top gene scientist, in which case I salute you!)

And that is to hope that the gene therapy I talked about a few weeks ago continues to evolve.

How gene editing could save millions of lives

To recap, gene therapy is a method of treating disease where scientists edit the genes in your body to give your cells different instructions. In doing so, you can switch off disease and life-threatening conditions.

In Tel Aviv University, for instance, Dr Udi Qimron Ph.D and his research team from are developing ways of delivering a special DNA sequence that will reverse antibiotic resistance.

Their brilliant method can pick out the bacteria that aren’t resistant, leaving only those that ARE.

Dr Qimron says: “We managed to devise a way to restore antibiotic sensitivity to drug-resistant bacteria, and also prevent the transfer of genes that create that resistance among bacteria.”

So there’s hope…

But it’s going to take research and development.

In the meantime, there are little things you can do to help keep yourself well.

How to keep yourself infection free

Make sure you never pressure your doctor into giving you anti-biotics – ask for a full diagnosis to find out whether your infection is viral or bacterial.

Many common viral infections will NOT be affected by anti-biotics, including:

  • Cold and flu
  • Most sore throats
  • Bronchitis
  • Some ear and sinus infections
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Most types of cough

If you’re concerned about an infection, talk to your doctor of course, but then consider:

  • Getting sunlight for vitamin D
  • Upping your intake of fresh, raw, seasonal fruit every day
  • Eating big portions of vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage and peas with your meals.
  • Taking a spoonful of raw Manuka honey every day, as this is a natural anti-biotic (avoid putting it in boiling water as this kills the nutrients).
  • Eating a piece of fresh garlic every day. Its natural active ingredient allicin can destroy viruses that antibiotics don’t touch. It also contains antioxidants that kill bacteria and free radicals.

These may sound like simple measures, but they are effective, natural and won’t threaten the human race with a major health catastrophe!

More importantly, if you build these into your life now, not only when you’re feeling ill, you could avoid many of the day-to-day bugs that knock us back!
