You feel ill.

You’re not sure why.

In an article that appeared recently in the journal Nature Biotechnology, they’ve shown that you can sequence someone’s genome with a handheld device.

One of the research team, Nicholas Loman, from the University of Birmingham, told the BBC:

“We’ve gone from a situation where you can only do genome sequencing for a huge amount of money in well-equipped labs to one where we can have genome sequencing literally in your pocket just like a mobile phone.”

He then went on to suggest that people could soon do this in their own home.

A genome sequencer could be something we have in our bathroom medicine cabinets, like a thermometer or blood pressure monitor.

One of the big benefits of genome sequencing on a mass scale will be better targeted treatments for cancer, as well as early detection of antibiotic resistance and the prevention of pandemics.

For instance, Professor Loman used the handheld sequencer to monitor an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.

Okay, so none of this is directly of use to you now…

But this could be the future of medicine – one in which you, or your children, or grandchildren can take control.

And actually, focussing on your genetic makeup – your DNA and RNA – is at the forefront of recent natural approaches to disease and pain prevention.

All pretty yummy, if you ask me, and reasonably available in the UK at a decent cost.

The only problem is that you have to eat a LOT more than just a little portion at the side of your dinner.

A big bowl of all of them once a day, draw or lightly steamed, would be ideal, along with some side-helpings with your meals.

And while there’s nothing wrong with juicing, ideally eating the whole food is better for you.
