You feel ill.
You’re not sure why.
But it’s an illness that gets worse and worse.
So you go to your GP.
He whips out a device, no bigger than your smartphone.
And then he uses it to sequence your genome.
As a result, he delivers a carefully targeted course of medicines directly related to your unique genetic makeup….
This isn’t the future.
It’s not Star Trek.
This has just been invented!
In an article that appeared recently in the journal Nature Biotechnology, they’ve shown that you can sequence someone’s genome with a handheld device.
One of the research team, Nicholas Loman, from the University of Birmingham, told the BBC:
“We’ve gone from a situation where you can only do genome sequencing for a huge amount of money in well-equipped labs to one where we can have genome sequencing literally in your pocket just like a mobile phone.”
He then went on to suggest that people could soon do this in their own home.
A genome sequencer could be something we have in our bathroom medicine cabinets, like a thermometer or blood pressure monitor.
One of the big benefits of genome sequencing on a mass scale will be better targeted treatments for cancer, as well as early detection of antibiotic resistance and the prevention of pandemics.
For instance, Professor Loman used the handheld sequencer to monitor an outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.
Okay, so none of this is directly of use to you now…
But this could be the future of medicine – one in which you, or your children, or grandchildren can take control.
And actually, focussing on your genetic makeup – your DNA and RNA – is at the forefront of recent natural approaches to disease and pain prevention.
Here’s an example…
A natural way to reverse age-related dysfunction in your muscles, heart, liver and blood lipids.
In March last year, research at Harvard Medical School showed that your body’s ability to repair DNA damage declines with age.
This is what makes you steadily weaker, more likely to put on weight, less energetic, less protected against illness and more susceptible to cancer.
In other words, the things that make you look and feel old, or tired.
However, there is a way for your cells to mend this broken DNA.
Research on mice shows that a natural compound called NMN can lessen and even reverse this DNA damage.
Yes folks, we’re getting close to the elixir of life!
This research backs up a study published in Cell Metabolism from October 2016, which also showed that NMN can slow down, and stop, the signs of ageing.
They found it could…
• Reverse metabolic dysfunction in the muscles, heart, liver and blood lipids
• Lower body weight by 9%
• Increase energy levels
• Boost insulin sensitivity, meaning less susceptibility to diabetes
• Lower cholesterol and triglycerides
• Less activation of ageing genes
• Improve eye sight and reduce ‘dry eyes’
• Boost bone density and muscle
• Improve your immune system function, meaning fewer infections and more cancer resistance
That is not a bad roll-call of benefits is it?
You’ve got your complete “reverse symptoms of ageing” package right there!
“We have shown a way to slow the physiologic decline that we see in aging mice,” said researcher Shin-ichiro. “This means older mice have metabolism and energy levels resembling that of younger mice. Since human cells rely on this same energy production process, we are hopeful this will translate into a method to help people remain healthier as they age.”
And if you want to do something about this right now there are foods that contain NMN….
Eat these 6 foods every day to feel better
The six goods highest in NMN are…
• Edamame beans
All pretty yummy, if you ask me, and reasonably available in the UK at a decent cost.
The only problem is that you have to eat a LOT more than just a little portion at the side of your dinner.
A big bowl of all of them once a day, draw or lightly steamed, would be ideal, along with some side-helpings with your meals.
And while there’s nothing wrong with juicing, ideally eating the whole food is better for you.
Added to that, if you can find local organic versions that haven’t been flown across the world, losing nutrients, that would be better too.
It’s a big problem these days – not only do we not eat enough vegetables, the ones we DO eat are sometimes 50% less nutrient rich that we ate in the 1950s.
I’ll write more about this is due course.
Okay, that’s it from me, but one thing before I go.
A last word on mints
I’ve had a great response to the other week’s email about protecting your teeth with mints.
If you sent me an email, thanks!
Yes, it does sound weird, as mints are normally filled with sugar.
But Dr Heff’s Remarkable Mints are made from Green Tea extract (with no caffeine in it), calcium phosphate, Xylitol and natural peppermint oil.
They clean and protect your teeth and reduce bad breath.
However, just to clarify, the idea isn’t that you replace regular brushing, but this is a healthy sweet you can have between meals that improves your oral health.
Used in combo with healthy brushing, you’ll smile like Tom Cruise ‘til you’re 108.
If you missed it, here’s The People’s Doctor’s webpage with more information: Click here to try Dr Heff’s Mints
Or you can read my newsletter on the subject: The sugar-free mint that cleans and protects your teeth
Until next time, stay healthy!
