You’ve probably heard of testosterone before….
It’s that hormone which makes you think of big, muscle-bound, aggressive men… body-builders, rugby players or angry football fans in a brawl, for instance.
But it’s something we all have in our bodies – and all need in order to function properly.
And from the time you hit 30, your levels start to drop at the rate of 1%-2% a year. By the time people hit 50, this is something that can cause significant health problems.

The little-known risk factor in low testosterone levels
But it’s not just a case of feeling more energetic and strong, like you were ten years ago. By raising testosterone levels you can avoid some even more serious problems.
According to a four year study at the University of Washington, (detailed in the Archives of Internal Medicine) men with low testosterone levels after age 40 have a higher risk of death than men with regular levels.
In another study at the University of California, found that in a sample of 800 men, those with low levels had a 33% higher risk of dying over an 18-year period.
So testosterone is not about manliness (or lack of it) and it’s not really a joke anymore. Experts see it as a key factor for good health in older men.
And yet many men don’t realise they might have low testosterone, or that it’s causing their symptoms. As many as 10% of men in the UK have this problem and undoubtedly only a fraction of those know about it. This is why I’d urge you to take another look at that list and think about it, as it could be important.

Why the male menopause is misleading
A lot of the symptoms of low testosterone are sometimes called the ‘male menopause’. This is a bit misleading, not helped by lazy media hacks who bandy it about in weekend supplement lifestyle articles.
The problem with ‘male menopause’ is that is suggest it works like women’s menopause – in the sense that you get a dramatic and sudden drop in testosterone when you hit middle age.
This isn’t true, it’s a steady decline from 30 years old, but one that has more and more affect as you hit 50 and over. For some people, that reduction is more severe and has more of an effect.
A lot of people put weak bones and muscles, belly fat and flabby man-breasts down to ageing, but it really doesn’t have to be that way. As well as looking after what you eat, getting some exercise and ensuring there are no underlying medical problems, you should think about raising your testosterone. See what happens!
